Live an authentic Colorado rail experience as you climb the steep grades of the Southern Rockies by train. See sweeping rugged mountain vistas and a variety of wildlife while enjoying tales of Colorado’s railroad and mining history as we travel over La Veta pass in air-conditioned comfort. Come see why USA Today named us a Top Ten Ride and book your own scenic Colorado train ride from Alamosa!

The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad begins in Alamosa, CO, and travels over La Veta Pass on historic tracks that were completed on June 22, 1878. Alamosa was quickly put on the map thanks to this narrow gauge rail that supplied ore, lumber, cattle, sheep, and farm products to the developing valley and, in turn, shipped out agricultural and mining products.

From 1890 to 1950, Alamosa hummed day and night with the activity of both passenger and freight trains from Denver, Durango, Santa Fe, Salida, and Creede. After the 1950s, the track was used exclusively for freight until it became part of Premier Rail Collection in 2006.

To complement Mother Nature’s stunning seasonal show, we added a range of autumn activities to our most popular ride, traveling across the pass to La Veta and back. Fall in Colorado brings the rich golden tones of Aspen leaves contrasted against the green pines, rugged rocks, and the wide open blue skies. Enjoy the comforts of our refurbished train as you revel in the beauty of the mountains.

Come see how the west was sung. The Mountain Rails Live concert series is our idea of a perfect Colorado summer day. It combines train rides with great live music performances. We’ve designed our mountaintop concert site to perfectly complement the acoustics of a natural meadow amphitheater powered by clean Rocky Mountain sun and wind. Ride once and become a believer!

A fun day!

My high school class reunion took the train and had a great time! All of the staff was friendly and informative. The train was very comfortable, and the food was very good. It was a long day but a very pleasant one. They seated our class in the same car, so it was a fun ride!

We really enjoy the "antique" train rides and this was one on our list to take. Friends of ours expressed an interest in going to Colorado with us and the RR was great about adding 2 tickets for seats that were together. We had gorgeous Colorado weather, the concert was great, food was good and staff was very personable. All in all, a great way to spend a day.

Enjoyable Day

We took the trip to Fir, CO for a Michael Martin Murphy concert. It was a full day, 2.5 hours each way on the train and a couple of hours at the concert. Meal was also served on the mountain. The concert was very good. There was a jam session by the band in the Diamond Class car on the return trip.

Great time

Went to Alamosa the day before and had time to rest up. Got an early start and got on the train in Fort Garland. Went to the concert sight and saw Michael Martin Murphy. Great concert and great train ride. Very smooth. We're planning next one.

Memories Are Made of This

Ride a train right out of the 1950s. Comfortable, air-conditioned car, great food, and fantastic views. There are many classes of service to fit every budget. Some themed trips are also available. Edna St. Vincent Malay wrote, "There isn't a train I wouldn't take no matter where it's going", take this one and find out why.

rio grande glass with beer The BEST concert of my life!!

I know it sounds strange, but the FIR stage at the top of La Veta pass (accessible by this train) provided me with the best concert experience of my life. It could have been the remote location, the train, the friendly people, the food and drinks, even the altitude, but I suspect it was all of the above with some GREAT music. I'm going again!!
