GREAT SAND DUNES NATIONAL PARK
Add a visit to America’s newest National Park to your stop in the San Luis Valley. Begin at the Visitor’s Center to learn how these dunes (the tallest in the U.S.) came to reside against nearby mountains in the middle of a landlocked state. Then we suggest you try hiking, sand boarding, horseback riding or splashing in the seasonal Medano Creek that rises up in the sand during run-offs. Or for the shutterbugs in your group capture stunning day and nighttime photography of an environment that is constantly changing. Open year round.
Zapata Ranch offers one of the most diverse landscapes in the United States with grasslands, forests, wetlands, and sand dunes. For a true Colorado experience the ranch features working ranch vacations, and educational programs centered around their bison herd. Horseback activities can include working and moving cattle, exploring the surrounding area including Great Sand Dunes National Park, or overnight pack trips into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Daytime activities include nature hikes, fly-fishing, birding, wildlife watching, geology tours, and more. But it’s not all roughing it; gourmet food is on the menu and guests are hosted in a comfortable lodge where massages and yoga sessions are available throughout the week.
