CONCERT TRAINS ABOARD THE RIO GRANDE SCENIC RAILROAD

From humble beginnings back in 2007 as a single performance on a temporary stage to the summer-long series with its iconic box star stage folks know today, our concerts have come a long way! Railroad President Ed Ellis, met singer songwriter Michael Martin Murphey, and a vision was created for a music destination high in the Colorado Rockies along the railroad route over La Veta Pass.

“I’ve always gone out of my way to perform Cowboy Music outdoors on the mountains and prairies- and I love trains!” Murphey said. “I befriended Rio Grande Scenic Railroad President, Ed Ellis and worked with him for four years, to create a log-sided permanent stage, Western-style food service and amphitheater with a 360 degree mountain view. Our mutual vision was to present music for the whole family – with an emphasis on Western, Country, Bluegrass and Folk.” GetBoulderBlog June 19, 2010. We were able to achieve that vision with a permanent structure built at 9,400 ft named the Fir Summit Amphitheater with a log-sided stage, a natural mountain meadow backdrop and access only by rail.

The concert series has undergone a few name changes along the way: High Altitude, Mountain Music Show and Roots & Boots before finding an apt moniker with Mountain Rails Live. But regardless of the name, the concept has stayed the same; a great train ride to a stunning mountaintop setting for an outdoor music performance. And you don’t have to take our word for it, USA Today has ranked us as a “TOP 10 Outdoor Music Venue” in the Nation!

We’ve had greats like the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, Larry Gatlin, Shenandoah, Pam Tillis, Suzy Bogguss and this year we will present Judy Collins. Of course we also have the annual returning performance by Michael Martin Murphey. Our Diamond Class guests get exclusive access in our private club car riding with the artists regularly enjoying impromptu jam sessions with the performers. The club car Mardi Gras, has music history of its own from its days on the Illinois Central line from Chicago to New Orleans. Singer songwriter Steve Goodman wrote his famous song “The City of New Orleans” on this train and you will instantly be transported back in time imagining yourself playing cards for pennies, rolling past farms and fields as the lyrics go.

2018 saw a big change when the tragic Spring Creek Fires burnt down our stage and green room with all the history and memories there. However, the show must go on and the rebuilding has begun! Be a part of this ongoing history and join us for the 2019 season of Mountain Rails Live.
